Washington, DC— The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), the coalition of 37 preeminent national Latino organizations, in conjunction with NALEO and MALDEF, will release a report describing the egregious and far-reaching discrimination faced by Latino voters in past election cycles and since the Supreme Court decided Shelby County v Holder in June 2013. The report underscores the need for Congress to move legislatively on updating the Voting Rights Act. A bill, the Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA), HR 3899, was introduced in January 2014 and currently has 22 bipartisan cosponsors. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, the committee of jurisdiction, has yet to schedule a hearing on the bill.
