NHLA ORGANIZATIONS GEARING UP TO INCREASE LATINO HEALTH INSURANCE ENROLLMENT

New enrollment period for ACA’s Health Insurance Marketplaces presents opportunity to build on previous success in securing health coverage for Latinos

Washington, D.C. – Member organizations of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of 39 of the nation’s preeminent Latino organizations, are preparing extensive outreach efforts to boost enrollment and re-enrollment of eligible Latinos during the upcoming open season of the Affordable Care Act's Health Insurance Marketplaces that open on November 15.

Last year’s enrollment efforts resulted in a significant drop in the number of uninsured Latinos, despite a rocky start due to problems with the online enrollment portal. According to an article published in the New English Journal of Medicine, 2.6 million Latino adults under the age of 65 gained health insurance coverage between the start of the Affordable Care Act’s initial open enrollment period in October 2013 and June 2014, amounting to a 7.7 percentage point drop in the uninsured rate over that period.

This fall, NHLA member organizations are organizing a broad range of activities across the country to educate consumers about the choices they have to get themselves and family members enrolled. These include regional forums, community events with bilingual enrollment assistance, and mobilizing Latino health professionals and local leaders to spread the word in person and through the media. Consumers can also learn more about how to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace online, in both English and Spanish.
