Please attribute the following statement on Kavanaugh’s nomination to Thomas A. Saenz, NHLA Chair and MALDEF President and General Counsel:

“The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) today takes the unusual step of publicly stating its opposition to a nominee for the United States Supreme Court.  Although the NHLA has not opposed another Supreme Court nominee in its 25-year history, it considers Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to represent a significant threat to the fair adjudication of Latino civil rights.  Therefore, NHLA is publicly opposing his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

“The process of Senate review of the Kavanaugh nomination has been unduly rushed and incomplete.  Thousands of pages of unreleased documents, together with a failure to adequately investigate and review indications of possible perjury and, raised most recently, allegations of sexual assault, epitomize a confirmation process that raises enough questions on its own to warrant a vote against confirmation.

“However, for NHLA, the currently available record, including Judge Kavanaugh’s previous decisions and opinions, are sufficient to urge his rejection.  Judge Kavanaugh’s record demonstrates a failure to understand and appreciate the rights of Latinos, including Latino immigrants.  His judicial thinking is far outside the mainstream in the United States.  Therefore, the NHLA urges the Senate to reject the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court.”
