NATIONAL LATINO LEADERSHIP: BUDGET RESOLUTIONS WOULD BE HARMFUL TO LATINO FAMILIES, CONGRESS MUST VOTE "NO"

NHLA will record votes in its Congressional Scorecard

Washington, D.C. – Today, the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of 39 of the nation's preeminent Latino organizations, issued letters to both houses of Congress strongly urging all Members of Congress to vote against the House and Senate Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Resolutions. NHLA will closely monitor votes on these resolutions, and related amendments in the Senate, for inclusion in NHLA's Congressional scorecard for the 114th Congress. In its letters to Congress, NHLA decries these unfair budget proposals for placing the burden of deficit reduction on those struggling to make ends meet while asking for no sacrifices from those who have benefited from the largest gains in wealth over the past decade.

The House and Senate Budget Resolutions worsen the recent trend of reducing the deficit at the expense of investments our economy needs in order to grow. Sixty-nine percent of the of the cuts in the resolutions are to programs that serve families and individuals with low or modest incomes, even though these programs constitute less than 25 percent of the costs of federal programs overall. In contrast to these cuts, the resolutions increase defense spending and fail to close any tax loopholes that benefit large corporations or the wealthiest Americans.
