IN LIGHT OF REPUBLICAN SENATORS’ MEETING WITH PRESIDENT, LATINO LEADERS PUSH FURTHER FOR DREAM ACT BY END OF YEAR

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a coalition of 45 of the nation’s preeminent Latino advocacy organizations, is urging members of Congress move forward with a clean DREAM Act before the end of 2017, despite the recent discussions held between Republican Senators and President Trump. The meeting resulted in an agreement that protection for DACA recipients would not be included in the end-of-the-year spending bill.

“The outcome of the recent meeting between Republican Senators and President Trump is exemplary of the anti-immigrant actions and rhetoric that are prominent at this time. It is unacceptable for members of Congress to leave in 2017 without a humane solution for the DACA recipients that lack the protection they need to continue living their lives in the United States, their home. If our elected officials are serious about not using DACA recipients as a political tool, they will pass a clean Dream Act now,” said Hector Sanchez Barba, Chair of NHLA and Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.

"Overwhelming majorities nationwide support relief for immigrant youth. Failure to enact the DREAM Act in time -- by the end of 2017 -- is an act of political recklessness that appeals solely to a narrow and extreme fringe of the nation's polity," said Thomas A. Saenz, NHLA Vice Chair and MALDEF President and General Counsel.
