LATINO LEADERS RELEASE 10 POINT PLAN FOR ADMINISTRATIVE AND CONGRESSIONAL ACTION FOR PUERTO RICO

WASHINGTON — Out of respect for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting, Congresswoman Velazquez, members of Congress, and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, a coalition of the nation’s 45 preeminent Latino advocacy organizations, postponed the press conference Monday on the release of NHLA’s 10 point plan for administrative and congressional action in providing aid to Puerto Rico.

As the nation mourns the largest mass shooting in the history of the United States, we continue to stand in solidarity with, and demand action for, our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico who face a different type of devastation. You will find the letter outlining the 10 point plan of action here. The letter was sent to the administration and members of Congress on October 1, 2017.

On Tuesday, NHLA watched the president’s visit to Puerto Rico unfold in real-time. The president criticized the Mayor of San Juan, again, the island and its budgetary challenges, and lavished praise on his administration’s slow response to the continued crisis. As President Trump visited, NHLA leaders held a press call to underscore the importance of acting on these 10 points. You will find the recording of the press call here.

It is more important now than ever, for us to call on Congress and the White House to focus seriously on ensuring that the people of Puerto Rico have access to the basic necessities in the short term and to rebuilding the island in the medium and longer term. It is time for our government to act now and act strategically.
