NHLA Invites Trump to Engage With Latino Leaders on Public Policy Issues

Coalition urges candidate to cease divisive rhetoric and focus on substance

WASHINGTON, DC – The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of 40 of the nation's most preeminent Latino advocacy organizations, sent presidential candidate Donald Trump another letter inviting him to engage with NHLA leaders in a discussion on public policy issues and to provide answers to a candidate questionnaire originally sent to his campaign in February.  Today’s letter is part of NHLA’s ongoing nonpartisan presidential engagement campaign, which the Trump campaign has not yet been responsive to, and was sent in light of Mr. Trump’s recently publicized efforts to engage with Latinos.

“We hope that Mr. Trump’s showcasing of his outreach to Latinos in recent days will be accompanied by a sincere engagement with our community’s leadership on the substantive policy issues that matter to our community,” said Hector Sanchez, NHLA Chair and Executive Director of the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement. "In the course of any engagement with Mr. Trump, we will also urge him to consider the negative consequences of his repeated rhetoric against our community and put an end to it immediately."

“History demonstrates the political folly in underestimating the Latino electorate; past elections demonstrate that Latino voters will not be fooled by candidate messaging in Spanish that is inconsistent with messaging in English, changes in messaging between primary and general election campaign, or the mere fact that a candidate speaks Spanish to Latino audiences,” stated Thomas A. Saenz, NHLA Vice Chair and MALDEF President and General Counsel.  “Latino voters are interested in genuine engagement with the Latino community on substantive policy positions, and whether the positions serve the best interests of the nation and of the Latino community.”
