NHLA PASSES RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF UNIONIZED SAG-AFTRA EMPLOYEES

Washington, DC—The following resolution was approved by the Board of the National Hispanic Leadership at their recent meeting on September 13th to express the support of unionized SAG-AFTRA employees who have endured systemic workplace abuses and unlawful terminations from employer Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS).

“Whereas SBS, a multi-million-dollar Latino-owned media magnate, reaches 17 media markets throughout the United States and is bolstered by its robust Latino audience and employees;

Whereas, despite the contributions of its talent providing on-air services, local Spanish-language radio stations La Raza and MEGA employees were paid less than minimum wage;

Whereas further workplace abuses include refusing to pay talent endorsement fees, denying meal breaks and access to bathrooms during live and remote events, rejecting overtime in violation of California law, and non-payment of cell phone expenses;

Whereas an overwhelming majority of SBS employees at La Raza (KLAX 97.9 FM) and MEGA (KXOL 96.3 FM) voted to join SAG-AFTRA as a response to these unlawful workplace practices in an effort to negotiate a fair contract to maintain their livelihood and protect their jobs; and

Whereas SBS responded to unionizing efforts and desires to be treated with dignity, by engaging in bad-faith bargaining, terminating eight unionized supporters, and coercive tactics.

Therefore, let it be resolved, that the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) strongly supports SAG-AFTRA’s endeavors on behalf of SBS employees and eight unlawfully terminated, SBS employees who experienced repeated workplace abuse: and,

Therefore, let it be further resolved that, the NHLA rebukes unfair treatment and gross injustices of Latino workers in the highly influential entertainment/broadcast industry.”
